WHO AM I?

…and what do I do?

Composer, producer, mixer, multi-instrumentalist.

Composer of music for Film, TV, Advertising and Video Games.

I write and perform in all styles, ranging from ambient/minimalist through all classical and jazz idioms to extreme modern rock and metal.

Producer of multiplatinum album projects.

Mixer of music for film , specializing in the use of postmodern remix techniques, large ensemble recording, modern and vintage treatments of orchestras, bigbands and small ensembles.

Mixer of CD projects in my Los Angeles studio.

Multi-instrumentalist, an accomplished pianist, keyboardist and synth programmer, guitarist, electric bassist, percussionist and arranger.

I am not much of a tap-dancer, however.

BIO

Producer, mixer, engineer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter John Whynot's multi-decade journey in music has taken him and his collaborators around the world and to the pinnacle of achievement in both professional recognition (Grammies, Junos) and record sales (multi-platinum). Starting in the early 80s, when he may have held the record for the sheer number of active bands he was in as a player (guitar, keyboards, saxophones), John frequently found himself in the producers chair in the studio, driven by a fascination with recording and an increasingly obvious talent for working the boards. Still, he found time to play in bands with Carole Pope, Doug Sahm, Rick Danko, Compass, The Pukka Orchestra, Colin Linden, and the inimitable Corey Hart, among many others. His move to LA in 1989 spurred a shift into film scoring. Within a few months of arriving there he literally stumbled into a project with composer Trevor Jones, and was hired on to program and mix the score to The Last of the Mohicans, which won that year's Oscar for sound. From there he went on to record orchestras and mix scores for dozens of feature films, including Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Ronin, Stigmata, Wild Things. Meanwhile, John continued making records in both LA and Toronto, winning a Juno for his work with Loreena McKennitt, mixing the mega-hit Five Days in July by Blue Rodeo, producing their masterpieces Nowhere to Here and Tremolo as well as Jim Cuddy's solo CD All in Time, and adding orchestra to the solo CD Some Devil by Dave Matthews. His work with Lucinda Williams on the Hank Williams tribute Timeless garnered him a Grammy Award. Recently, John played piano for the Luminato Festivals concert tribute to Bruce Cockburn, recorded and mixed Cockburn's upcoming CD, mixed the debut CD for Harlan Pepper and has begun writing the score for Jim Hanks' new film Hazelnut
